Baby Comfy Nose Review

I am one of those moms that really looks for a product that I love and that does its' job efficiently. I need efficiency- I work full time, so when I need something to work, it has to do its' job. At around 5-6 months old, I had to place my daughter in daycare and seriously, she caught nearly every cold, cough and snotty nose in that place. I was still exclusively breastfeeding, and as we know, the baby has to be able to suck, swallow and breathe. If they can't breathe through their nose, then they don't eat as much or well at all because they keep having to unlatch to breathe. Thus began the mission for the best nasal aspirator.

First, of course, I used the hospital bulb syringe. It was hard to squeeze and I seriously had to suck her brains out like 20 times to just get one booger. It was uncomfortable for her and not efficient. And she would be crying bloody murder by the time I was done, and seriously, that just makes more snot I have to get out! I literally bought every single different style I could find on the market. Seriously. The picture to the right are all the aspirators I tried after the one from the hospital. The best was the bottom right, which actually came in an earwax removal kit. Not only that, those things are NASTY. Of course I cleaned it with alcohol or a hot water rinse after use, but we know it just doesn't clean it RIGHT. This picture went viral from an article written originally on The Stir about finding mold in bulb syringes (just follow the link for the pictures, though I'm sure you've seen them). Well, I found out that exposure to mold before one year of age increases risk for asthma, super duper when you have a kid who has been on Nebulizer treatments since 5 months old.

Then came the next round of aspirators, the battery operated ones. We tried the Graco NasalClear Nasal Aspirator first. It didn't even have any suction- not a single booger. NOT A ONE! I tried it up my nose and it was PATHETIC. I even exchanged it thinking I had a defective unit. Nope. It sucked. Well, didn’t suck. That got returned to BRU. Then I tried the Safety 1st ProGrade Clean Collection Nasal Aspirator. Again, not enough suction. Back to the store that went. Yeah, I know you're thinking I'm absolutely disgusting for returning these, but they don't do what they say they'll do, then they aren't providing what they were purchased to do. Plus, the stores get credited and toss them. Gross, maybe? Do I feel guilty about getting back my 30-40 dollars, nope, not one bit.

Finally at this point, I completely was over it and ordered a Nosefrieda. The whole idea of this made me want to completely gag, but I needed efficiency. My baby girl kept getting sick and we were going on three months of stuffy nose causing fluid and infection in her ears. It's a good product. I'm not knocking it, but there are a few flaws that prevent it from being the most effective and functional product on the market.

The first problem is the left arrow. The tubing connector doesn't attach and STAY onto the collection tube. So, problem here is you have to hold that, as well as the baby. My technique was to swaddle/burrito baby as tightly as humanly possible to keep her arms out of the way. I had to do it this way because Hubby was gone for 6 months training for his job/promotion. Well, my child eventually hated this thing because it would really suck EVERYTHING out of the sinuses. Not a bad thing- it does exactly what it's supposed to do. I finally got to the point where I would just tape the stupid thing together (don't judge me). Then there's the issue with the filter. These things get lost and fall out so easily, you can go through a whole package of 20 if your kid is sick for an entire week (like Nugget was once with the flu). Second issue is the tip. It's made of hard plastic, so it's not very comfortable jammed up the baby's nose. It really is uncomfortable if you're trying to hold baby, the part that falls apart, AND then tip in the nose. Then don't forget the part if you're sinusey too... you might have to plug YOUR nose to get and maintain a good suction on the device. So there's ANOTHER extra hand needed... How many hands does this make that you need? Oye.

So Finally, I came across the Baby Comfy Nose Nasal Aspirator. I contacted the company to see if they'd be willing to provide one for me to test out. So, here I am telling you all about the Baby Comfy Nose.
I had absolutely no issue with any of the parts coming loose or undone while using this with Nugget. Granted, she still was ticked that I was sucking her brains out, but she got over it. With it being "allergy season" here in Arizona (yes, seriously), we've had to use this a quite a few times lately. Next, this little device uses a tissue for a filter. Everyone has them on hand, and if you don't some TP will work just the same. Just make sure you use enough. Much more economical and convenient than having to buy those little filters from Nosefrieda. Lastly, the nose piece that actually is inserted into the nose is a soft silicone, and it doesn't hurt.

As you can see on the picture above left, it comes completely apart for easy washing. You can toss it in the bag and put it in the dishwasher that way, or stick it in one of those bottle/nipple dishwasher baskets and BAM it's clean. Just hang in the bag to dry for the next use (see picture to the right). If you're using it more frequently than you're running dishes, then you want to just wash in the sink with HOT soapy water. Not only that, you can place the tubing in a pot of boiling water or run some peroxide through it. I personally prefer the boiling method. It's what I did with my breast pump parts and it works a treat.

I definitely prefer the Baby Comfy Nose Nasal Aspirator over the Nosefrieda. And those words, my friends, are words I never expected to say type.

  8. I have the Nosefrida & love it over regular aspirators. But I'd love to try this one. I like the different design to make it easier to hold a squirmy baby & use it & that it doesn't require a special filter!

  10. Healthy human lungs generate 5-10 times more suction power than bulb/ battery operated syringes. Wish I knew about these when we had the flu for three weeks this winter.
