Nesco Dehydrator Review

I have been wanting to use a dehydrator for some time now, just never got around to getting one. I had the opportunity to review Nesco’s FD-77DT Digital Top Mounted Dehydrator. I had no idea what fruits would be best to put in there so I did a little research and picked some of my favorite.

I did not realize that it took so long to get everything prepared. Depending on the fruit, I had to peel, cut, wash or boil them before they could go into the dehydrator. So it took awhile for me to get the bananas, peaches, strawberries, and blueberries. Even though it took some work to get everything started, it was fun. Even my husband got into the spirit and helped me with the preparation.

Seeing on how this was the very first time I had ever used a dehydrator, I had no idea how long it had to be on. Luckily Nesco has a book that tells you exactly what tempature and how long that food item needs. With the digital reading on the top you can set the temperature and the length you want it on. I was surprised that most needed at least 10 hours if not longer.

This dehydrator comes with 4 trays but you can expand it up to 12 if you want to buy more. I was ok the first time with the 4 that it came with but I am thinking I may want to buy a few more. We are in the process of moving so i’ll wait until we get to the new house then order some.

The worst part of the whole experience was having to wait the 10 hours to try everything out. I started it in the evening so that by the time we got up in the morning it should be done. I did learn that I should have set it a little longer. with the digital, it turned off since I told it to run for 10 hours. That was my fault for not knowing. The fruit still tasted so good that even though it was “undercooked”.

I can’t wait to try more things other than fruit, like spices and beef jerky. I have bought dried fruit in the store, but the ones we made tasted so much better and fresh. This model cost $115, but is worth it in my opinion since you can do so much with it. I really recommend that you check t out, and maybe buy one for yourself or even as a gift (it is wedding season).

  2. Yummy sound/looking. This would be a great treat. To start, of course dehyrate fruit. Love these and family has always loved dried fruit from the stores. But never even thought of making them ourselves! This would also make us try all different types of fruit, but using it, I'm sure we'd be up for trying many new things also to dehydrate. Fun fun fun!

One of the things I used to dehydrate (when I had a machine) was watermelon. It is ah-mazing! Try it! I really want more, but I don't have my old machine any more. I'd adore a new dehydrator! My kids would be really into using it and experimenting too!

I would use this to make different flavors of beef jerky by marinating the beef in different flavors of sauce before dehydrating!!! It's cheaper to make it than to purchase packaged jerky so I WANT THIS!!!!
