Give Back with #100GoodDeeds at Macy's

Every once in awhile I find a cause that really speaks to me. One that I know really helps people, especially women and children. I was recently asked to take a look at #100GoodDeeds. In essence, it is all about helping others, while at the same time raising money of course.

Good deeds, have you done something good for someone, just because? Or has someone done something for you? Only a few months ago I had someone, a stranger do something for me just because, and it was amazing. My family and I were going through stuff in the house, cleaning up and such. When it came to dinner time, I didn’t have energy to cook so I offered to run and get dinner. They all wanted Popeye’s to which I’m like ok sure. I hadn’t been to it in our town yet and thought they had a drive thru, well I was wrong. As I pulled up, I kept thinking well this will be interesting (I use a cane to walk due to medical issues). A gentleman saw me going towards the door and waited to keep it open for me (ok, thank you). Then allowed me to order before him. It was a big order, 4 people and a very hungry husband, so it wasn’t a cheap total. That same gentleman that held the door for me, interrupted as I was giving the cashier my card, and gave his instead and said he would pay for me. I was shocked, and speechless. I didn’t know this man, and he just paid for our entire family meal, which was about $33. I of course said thank you like a million times, and then he left after he got his food. It truly was a good deed and very much appreciated as well.

When I was asked to help with the 100 Good Deeds Bracelet campaign, I thought it was a good way to give back in a small way. At least a start. I was given three bracelets. One, I was to keep, one I am to giveaway to a lucky reader (stay tuned for the giveaway), and the last to give to someone who I think gives to others and who does good deeds.

The first person that came to mind besides my mother is my good friend Simone. Simone is older than I, but that really didn’t matter. I met her when I was only 4. She and her husband are family friends. As I got older I started to babysit her kids (I said she was older). Then as I became an adult we really became friends. The age difference didn’t matter, we were friends. She has always been there to lend a helping hand when she could or just listen to me vent about in the end are just little, but seem big at the moment. She is an OB nurse and in her spare time she volunteers and helps women who are pregnant at a free clinic. Doing ultrasounds and helping them with other areas as well. She actually did the first ultrasound on me when I was only 7 weeks along with my youngest (who just turned 4 a few days ago). So, as you can see she does a lot of good, and I thought she would be a perfect recipient of one of my bracelets. When I messaged her that I wanted to send her one, she was so thrilled and couldn’t wait to receive it.

MaryFisher, the designer of the 100 Good Deeds Bracelets, and the face of the movement, believes that “a ‘good deed’ means we’ve gone out of our way to help someone, and only counts if the deed remains anonymous.” These bracelets are not only a fashion statement, but also an everyday reminder to its wearer to do good deeds.”

Each bracelet is made by hand by a woman in another country like Africa, Haiti, India, Bali, Indonesia and even some here in the United States. They are each boxed up and the name of the woman who made them is written on the cover. I love this as it really makes it personable even though you are buying in a department store or online like Macys.com. When we purchase the bracelets, the money goes to the women and helps them support their families. They are all made of adjustable nylon braided cord, have 100 glass beads (hence the name), and have a rubber ring.

When you receive the bracelet and wear it this is what you do:
  1. Wrap it around your wrist three times. The bracelet is available in Petite/Small and Medium/Large, depending on wrist size. Adjust the length, sliding the knot along the cord and closer to the “1GD” button.
  2. Each time you do a good deed, move the ring one bead closer to the “1GD” button.

The bracelets are $30 each, and are well worth every penny. These women obviously take pride in the work as it shows. They won’t fall apart fast and you can wear them with pride. There are many different colors to choose from and also different sizes. I hope that you will take a look at them, and maybe even buy a few for yourself and others who have inspired you to do good deeds.

  2. There was an older gentleman who's car stopped running at a traffic light. I was walking home from work and stopped to ask if he needed help. I ended up pushing his car to the side of the road and letting him use my cellphone to call for assistance. I stayed with him until the tow truck came. He was so happy!

  3. I've had a lot of good deeds done for me recently. I've been very sick during my latest pregnancy and I've had countless people bring flowers, meals, and even pick my kids up to go do something fun.

  22. We have 2 pet bunnies and around 6:30am Friday morning I was woken by the doorbell ringing, it was a neighbor that was returning our bunnies after chasing after them for nearly 20 minutes before catching them. Apparently my husband didn't latch their pin after feeding them the night before.
Thank God for our neighbor, my son loves his bunnies and would have been distraught had they gone missing.

There was a toddler that was lost and very distraught in the courtyard, I comforted him and helped him find his mum.

  27. I always help my mom out around the house because it's tough on her to do it alone, and that includes helping to take care of my grandmother who lives with us. It makes me feel good to make life a little easier for someone else, especially people I love

  28. About two weeks ago I went grocery shopping by myself and bought quite a few things, many of them very heavy. I'd parked my car about two blocks from the store, which was set up such that I wouldn't have easily been able to take my cart out to the street. One of the employees actually pushed my cart out for me, and loaded everything into my car for me. I politely protested quite a bit, because I really am not used to anyone doing nice things for me-- and, I'm so used to doing good deeds for others. He was very nice, and explained that it was something that the store does for its customers. I still felt a bit self-conscious, though... It was difficult, and strange, to have someone do something kind for me (and not expect anything in return)-- even if it's just "part of the job."
