2 PCs in 1 in the Kangaroo Notebook

If you are looking for a new pc notebook that you can just throw into your purse and go, then The Kangaroo Notebook may just be the right one for you. That sounded a little “infomercial” like, didn’t it? Well, that’s not where I was going with it, but it’s still true. It’s an odd name for a computer, but it’s super cool, small and very portable. I even put it in my purse to check it out.

The Kangaroo Notebook is a 2 in 1 and not like you are used to. This has 2 PC’s in 1. Meaning, that there are 2 modules (called Kangaroo Mini) that come with it. The modules are what make the computer work. The shell (or Notebook Dock) is the screen, and keyboard. My first thought, is why would you need multiple modules, why can’t they just put more memory onto one and make it like what we are used to? Then I thought about it, and thought it’s pretty genius really. Having them separate allows you to separate your things. Say you do homework, or work stuff but also use it for personal or let your kids use it. This way, one module is only for your work/homework etc and the other for the kids or whoever else. Then, nobody can get things mixed together, docs don’t get deleted by mistake.

The modules weigh only 0.11 lbs, with the dimensions being: 3.75”x 1.61”x 0.8, so they are very thin and light. I used my label maker to put “A” and “B” on them, so I know which is which. They are easy to put in and take out. Taking them out is only pulling them some. They stick out from the base a little, so that makes it easier.

Much like most notebooks/laptops you get multiple USB ports, and an SD card reader that can support up to 512GB). Here are some other specs for the doc and for the modules.

Kangaroo Dock specs:
  • Display: 11.6-inch HD Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
  • Max Resolution: 1366 x 768
  • Webcam: 1MP 720p HD CMOS Camera (30fps@1280×800)
  • Audio: Integrated 1W Speaker and Microphone
  • Weight: 2.64lbs / 1.2kg
  • Dimensions: (inches): 11.41” x 7.71” x 0.39”   /   (mm):  289.9 x 196 x 19.9
  • Color: Matte Black
  • Adapter: 36W (12V~3A) AC Adapter
  • Battery: 37Whr/5000mAh Lithium-Ion Battery
  • USB 2.0: 1x USB 2.0 (Type-A): Supports 500mA power
  • USB 3.0: 1x USB 2.0 (Type-A): Supports 500mA power
  • Audio Out: 1x 3.5mm (⅛ inch) Audio Jack
  • SD Media: 1x SD Card Reader(supports SDSC, SDHC, and SDXC formats, 512GB max)
  • Proprietary: 1x Slot for Kangaroo Mini PC  (required for operation)
  • And more

Kangaroo Mini (modules):
  • Chipset: Cherry Trail
  • Processor:1.44 GHz Intel® Atom™ x5-Z8350
  • Cache: 2MB
  • Instruction Set: x64
  • Base Frequency: 1.44 GHz
  • Burst Frequency: 1.92 GHz
  • CPU Cores: 4
  • Processor Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics
  • Graphics Memory: Shared
  • Operating System:
  • Architecture: x64
  • Operating System2: Windows 10 64-Bit Home edition

Overall I really like the system. It does have its flaws, as most do. The biggest thing is if you want a program like office on both modules, you need to have 2. We buy multiple when we got my daughter’s laptop a few months ago, so it wasn’t a big deal then, but you can always only use one for all word. Otherwise there are other ways around it like using google docs (which I LOVE).  I think the only other thing I didn’t really like is that the keyboard is a bit loud when you type, but again, that’s nothing major.

I think this is a great option for on the go people as it’s small, but you can still do what you need to do on it. The lack of storage isn’t really a big deal for me on the modules as you can use a SD card much like any other computer or device. Price wise, it’s comparable to other laptops it’s size, running at $299. You can buy it from Newegg and accessories from Amazon. If you are looking for a gift for the upcoming Valentine’s Day, this may be a great option.

  1. I love that it's as small as a tablet but with most of the computing power of a regular laptop. I learned that you need to buy 2 licenses for software if you want to use them on both modules.

  22. I like the small size, but that also makes for a small screen too. With the processor, memory & storage in the little modules, then later on maybe they will come out with a more powerful processor and/or more memory which would make it very easy to upgrade the system.
