It's Flu Season!! Tips to Prevent the Spread of the Virus! #MC

“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for MedImmune Specialty Care. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”

This is the time of year that many dread the most, FLU season!! It is said that kids miss an average of 38 MILLION days of school in one year from the flu!! Despite what many people think, the flu is actually a respiratory virus, and not a stomach bug. I was under that mistaken thought for many years, and I know I am not alone. I wanted to share with you some facts about the flu that might help you along the way. My oldest son and I are both recovering from a cold right now, but thankfully he has had the flu vaccine so I do not expect any episodes of that in our home. My son has "viral induced asthma" so he is especially susceptible to the flu and to becoming severely ill with it.

How are the cold and flu different?
Both are respiratory illnesses, but they originate from different viruses. The flu usually causes much more severe symptoms than a cold, including fever, chills, vomiting, irritability, and "whole body" symptoms.

How can we work together to prevent the flu?

  • Well, one of the biggest factors is washing your hands properly. Make sure you cleanse them thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds, and include your wrist and nails into this.
  • If your child has had a fever, they should stay home from school for 24 hours after the last sign of fever.
  • If you have to cough or sneeze, do it in a tissue- or the crook of your arm if a tissue is not available
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Stay hydrated and eat a health balanced diet
  • The single most important way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccination. It is recommended that everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated. There is the flu mist available for many children so they do not have to have an injection. I know my son certainly appreciated that this year!
  • Disinfect your home after someone has had the flu. Disinfect is different than just cleaning, and requires the use of certain chemicals that kill viruses.

Despite what you may have heard, the flu vaccination does NOT cause the flu. If you would like to learn more about the Flu virus and prevention, check out the FREE ebook from Elizabeth Pantley, author of the "No Cry Sleep Solution" called, "A Parent's Guide to Flu Season" It includes all the facts I listed above and much, much more. It is a MUST read for the Flu season.
