Fear of Intimacy and the Tango Cure

Once in a while I get asked to review a book.  Books are hard because it really depends on the mood I’m in and what genre they are. I was recently asked to review a book about the overcoming the fear of intimacy through the dance of Tango. I thought that was in interesting concept and was happy to take a look at it.

Fear of Intimacy and the Tango Cure starts out with Perri Iezzonli saying that “After ten years of marriage, my discomfort with physical contact was at critical levels. Two years later, I was divorced. Three years after my divorce, I realized that I was in serious danger of becoming a hermit and that drastic measures needed to be taken in order to prevent that from becoming a reality.”   That part really drew me in. I mean who hasn’t had that issue at some part of a marriage. Some people can fix it before divorce is an issue but like Perri, some don’t. I think that will resonate with other people as well.

A Perri was working on finding himself through dance he found the number one rule.  “The dance is all about the woman. If I am respectful of her, I am also paying homage to us as a couple and to my relationship to the crowd.” I think that is a very true and observant. If only more men would realize this in life and not only in dance.

Whoever came up with the phrase “it takes two to tango” was on the money. Without two people being actively involved in the dance (or romance) it can’t work. One can lead but if the other doesn’t follow, the dance is over.
Yes, this book is about the Tango but I found it more about romance, about finding one’s self, and being ready to love again freely without being scared.

You can tell that Perri wrote from the heart and to me that goes a long way. He used great skill in describing how he felt. I could almost feel the emotion of the dance coming from the page. Very well written and I’m so happy the way it ended.
