The Wilderness Resort

My family loves going on getaways for the weekend. It’s our chance to regroup and recharge our batteries for whatever lies ahead. We were planning a weekend trip with my siblings and parents and wanted to go to the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. I was very happy when they agreed to a review of their resort. Since my family and I had already booked the room, the Wilderness Resort was kind enough to give us a complimentary breakfast and 3 Wild Fun Passes (the baby can’t use one of course).

We arrived on Friday, check in was nice and easy in the main lobby. Once we got to our room and unpacked a little we were ready for the fun to start. Mya of course wanted to hit up the wave pool right away. I wasn’t surprised as that girl loves water.

I’ll take a step back for a second here. If you have never been to the Wilderness I will explain a little about it. At the main property (Wilderness Resort) there are 3 indoor water parks, a four-story dry play park, 2 mega arcades, 2 indoor mini golf courses, a laser tag arena, an indoor ropes course and a new indoor go kart track which will be opening in summer 2014. They are all spread out throughout the resort. What’s great is that you don’t need to go outside to get to them. This is really nice since we went in January and it was really cold out.

For the lodging options, they have different three different properties: their main hotel, Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort; Glacier Canyon Lodge which are all one, two or three bedroom condo units, and Wilderness on the Lake, which are all one or two bedroom condo units. They also have a variety of freestanding frontier condos, vacation villas and three, four or five bedroom cabins.

We stayed at the Glacier Canyon Lodge since we had a good size group and wanted more room then single rooms. They have full kitchens, spacious living rooms and are very nice. They have pretty much everything you need including all the dining ware, pots and pans.

Once Mya got into the water, it was hard to get her out.  She played for a while in the wave pool then decided to go over to the next park and joined me in the hot tub for a little while. Darin was playing with Fallon in the kid’s area. After a while we packed up and went up to the rooms to go to bed.
Saturday morning was full of fun. We started off with breakfast at the Wild Canyon Café. At first we were going to do the regular menu until we saw the buffet. It was really good and a ton of choices. There were the basics of cereal, French toast, bagels, donuts, eggs, sausage. Then they also had Eggs Benedict which is a favorite breakfast item of mine. The buffet was very large and everything looked good. My family ate until their hearts content. We were seated right away and treated very well by the wait staff. I would definitely recommend going there for breakfast if you have a chance.

When we were done with breakfast, we chose to use part of our Wild Fun Pass. Fun Passes are great as they are the extra things that aren’t free in the resort. If you buy the pass, you save on the cost of the attractions. On our Wild Fun Pass we were able to enjoy 2 mini golf games, an indoor ropes course, bumper boats, lazer tag and then we could choose one of those to do again if we wanted because at the time of our visit all of the new things planned for 2014 were not yet completed.
The first thing we did was one of the mini golf courses, The Wild Abyss. It is a 3D and black light, and a ton of fun for 9 holes. We had Fallon with us during the game but she just watched us play and carried our balls for us. Since one of us had to watch Fallon and I’m not able to do laser tag, I took Fallon up to the room and Darin, Mya and my niece went and played laser tag. They loved it. One of the cool thing is once the game is done they give you a card that tells you how many time you shot and missed or hit the target and what your percentage was. Mya thought that was pretty cool and wants to do it again next time we go to the Wilderness.

We all then went back down to the water parks and played for the rest of the day. Before heading in for the night Mya wanted to do the indoor ropes course. Darin and my niece had fun with it. They said it was awesome, Mya knew what to expect since she had done it once before at summer camp. Sunday was our last day. We packed up the room since we needed to check out but didn’t go home since we had more fun and more games to play. We first did the second mini golf game, The Wile Buccaneer. I was much better this time as I was able to practice the day before and actually got 2 holes in one (great for me). Once that was over we headed downstairs to the dry arcade and let the girls play for a little while until Mya, Darin and my niece again were ready to do the indoor ropes course for the second time. Right before we left we did the bumper boats and swam a little more before we got to tired then made our way home.

Overall we had a fantastic time and can’t wait to go again soon. There are a bunch of new attractions coming this year.  For the kids I think the coolest thing will be the two-story Wilderwoods Go-Kart Trail. There will also be a new OK Corral Lazer Tag Two-Story Arena that will also have a laser maze in it that you will have to use speed and agility to get through it. For the adults there will be a Margarita swim-up bar. This will be in the WaterDome waterpark. I can’t wait to come back and take advantage of that for sure.  In addition to those new attractions there will also be a new food court area with Yukon Yogurt, Klondike Kate’s Libations and  Klondike Pizza Kitchen. The pizza kitchen will also deliver to the entire resort, so you don’t have to walk all the way down there if you don’t want to.
The Wilderness Resort has some great deals during the week and also tons of specials going on. We went to the one in Wisconsin Dells, but they also have a property in Tennessee near the Smoky Mountains. To learn more about the Dells’ property visit www.wildernessresort.com
