Christmas Traditions Evolve over time

When I was a kid we used to travel the 4 hours to my dad’s on Christmas Eve then on Christmas Day we would drive back home and spend the day with my mom. That was the tradition for many years until it just became too much to do, with small children. I think traditions evolve over time and whatever works for you and your family is cool.

I have been married for 5 years, and each year is a little different. Instead of spending Christmas Eve at my dad’s, all of us kids go to a waterpark resort in January and spend the weekend having fun. It takes away so much pressure of traveling, buying gifts and we can focus on what’s really important: being together and having fun.

Since we don’t go to my dad’s, we attend Christmas Eve service at church, any my oldest daughter sings with the other kids. After church we usually go over to my in-law’s house for a late dinner/snack and open presents. I have been in and out of the hospital for that last 3 years so last year we started changing it a little and having the in-laws come to our house after the church service. This way it is easier on me, and my kids since it gets a little late.

What we do on Christmas Day really depends on if my husband has to work or not. If he works then myself and the kids just hang out like normal until he gets home. If he doesn’t work, then we get up, “open” stockings, have breakfast then open presents. We then just spend the rest of the day playing board games, video games or whatever we want as a family.

I’m sure our traditions will change as our kids get older (currently age 11 and 2), and I’m ok with that. I think as long as everyone enjoys ourselves that all that really matters.
What do you and your family do for Christmas traditions?

I’m almost done with my shopping, but have a few more things to buy. This Friday, I am going to Walmart’s Toyland #ChosenByKids to finish up what I have left. Check out to see if there is a store near you that is having one too. I’m sure it’s going to be a blast. Stay tuned next week for the highlights of it as well.

  1. We also travel a few good hours to my parents' house and back and yes, it's pretty hard to travel, especially with kids. But the joy on their faces make up for it big time. We're trying to get them come to us this year though, fingers crossed :)

  2. Very true on the tradition change. We have had to adapt ours yearly depending on when my step son is here etc. Traditions are nice, but being able to adapt to make the best of them for your family is even better!

  3. As long as the family is together, that's all that matters. We always have Christmas Eve at my MIL's and then Christmas Day is usually at my sister's house or my house - we alternate.

  4. Its hard when someone has to work over a holiday, it can feel kinda empty. I'm glad I get to spend pretty much all of them with my husband.

  5. I love family traditions. I'm learning to accept that they will change- no matter how much I want them to stay the same... and that it's OK that way!

  6. We do not have many family traditions, but we do open gifts on Christmas Eve and have a pizza party after. The aterpark is a great idea!

  7. We still do some of our holiday traditions, but some have evolved and some are new as we build our own family.

  8. The best family memories are made when plans are fluid. Traditions can be built anywhere

  10. Our Christmas has always been laidback like that too. The kids play, we watch Christmas movies and there may or may not be naps involved. :)
