VTech Safe & Sound Owl Digital Video Baby Monitor

I’m definitely the go to person among my friends when it comes to baby products specifically monitors. I love how they work and each one is a little different. Being disabled, it’s hard for me to get up and check on my daughter sometimes. So having a video monitor makes it so much easier. Recently VTech sent me their newest monitor to try out: the VTech Safe & Sound® Owl Digital Video Baby Monitor with Pan & Tilt Camera VM344.

Before I start, I do want to say, that this is not a wifi video monitor. This works with the camera and the handset. While I love wifi cameras and monitors, I also like simple. This also keeps the risk down to being hacked.

Most of the time, monitors are just a dome, VTech took that and decided to have fun with it and made this camera in the shape of an owl. It really is super cute. Fallon saw it, she wanted it in her room right away. This set is beyond easy to set up. All you have to do is plug the owl into the wall and place it where you want it, or mount it on the wall (mounting brackets are included). Then turn on the handheld monitor, sync them and you are good to go. Personally, I don’t mount the monitors on the wall. I don’t because I like to move them around her room, or put in a different room.

The quality of picture is great, and on a 4.3 inch color LCD screen! The range is up to 1000 feet, so you can take it all over the house and still be good. The thing I like the best, is that you can talk to the child. Fallon knows I can see her during the day and even at night with their night vision. There are times she wants to get out of bed, but since I can talk to her through camera I can keep her in bed and help her fall to sleep faster.

You can also move the camera around, pan up to 270 degrees, tilts up to 120 degrees and zoom. This feature comes in handy when you have a kid planing in a room and you need to move around to see them.

Other features:

  •         Full-motion video
  •         Supports up to 4 baby units (uses VM314 camera)
  •         Multiple viewing options - single view, split-screen view and patrol mode
  •         Automatic infrared night vision
  •         Talk-back intercom
  •         Vibrating sound-alert on the parent unit
  •         Temperature sensor
  •         Sound and motion activation mode
  •         Rechargeable battery with low-battery alert on the parent unit
  •         9-level sound indicator
  •         Volume control

Right now you can buy this at Target, and babiesrus for $199-$259 depending on if you want one or two cameras. If you have more than one little one or you like to have them in different rooms without moving them, getting two cameras is worth it.

I really recommend checking this out and their other monitors for yourself or for a great baby shower gift!

  4. I read all the baby monitor posts since they fascinate me. The owl is the cutest yet and I don't need the excuse of not having a baby to try it. They look well made and so practical.

  5. I want to get this for my mom. I am her caregiver, she is 87, and I'm always peeking in her room to maje sure she's ok. I think products like these are wonderful not just for babies, but for those of us that care or ill and elderly parents.

  10. What a great idea of putting it into an Owl shape - I also like the idea that it's more "low tech" in that it's not wi-fi - the idea of someone breaking into the feed would scare me. Great post - thanks for sharing about your experience with the product.
