Magellan RoadMate GPS and Dash Cam

To say that I am directionally challenged is an understatement. I’m the type of person that needs to know to turn right or left, not east or west. I have wanted a GPS system for a long time. I love using my phone, but sometimes it doesn’t work and when it does, I can’t always use other features the way I want (when I’m a passenger). I was so happy when I had the chance to review Magellan’s new RoadMate 6630T-LM.

The only other thing I wanted for my car was a dash cam. Luckily the RoadMate 6630T-LM also has a dash cam making it an all in one. One of the best parts of the dash cam that I love is that you can take pics while recording video. It comes with an 8 GB micro SD card so you have something right away, or you can use your own if you have or need something with more space (up to 64 GB).

Features:

  •          GPS Navigator + Full HD 1080p Dash Camera: 2 great devices in one! Promotes safer, stress-free driving while providing extra security for your vehicle whether on the road or in a parking lot.
  •          Free Lifetime Map Updates & Traffic Alerts: Receive up to 4 free map updates a year for the life of the device and real-time alerts of traffic incidents with alternative route options.
  •          Impact Recording: G-Shock Sensor locks video recording upon impact and saves location and time information for event accuracy.
  •          Traffic Camera Alerts by PhantomALERT: Receive audio and visual warnings of red light and speed limit cameras along a route.
  •          Driver Assistance Alerts: Receive audible and visual warnings for potential driving hazards like lane departure, forward collision, driver fatigue, and more

Set up is a breeze. To make it easier, set up while inside your home and wifi. That way you can download the latest map right away. After that, just put the suction onto the windshield and you can pop the unit on and off as needed without taking everything down.

There are only 2 things I didn’t like about this unit, and they are tiny things. One is the battery life isn’t long, but then again, it’s not really meant to be unplugged (so not really a big deal). The second is while I love the audio warning for potential driving hazards, I don’t want to hear about every car being too close.

One of the other things I really love is that it will display the speed limit right on the screen. Being in the desert, the speeds range from 45 to 75mph depending where you are, and signs are few and far between. Having it there, is a big help.

We took it on a road trip to Phoenix a couple weeks ago and used it while we were in the city. I had no issues with it not finding the location and it brought everything up super fast. To me that’s a great thing, as I really hate sitting there and finding directions to someplace.

You can set it to remember up to 16 locations, which is great if you have a few that you go to all the time. That way wherever you are, you just hit home, or wherever and no need to type in the address.

Overall I really love this GPS and dash cam. Magellan really thought of the consumer and what their likes would be. From what I have experienced, the price tag is well worth it and could even make for a great Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gifts.
