 Another thing to keep in mind is ABLE is a great way that family and friends can give gift to the disabled that have an account set up. They can all deposit money into their account for  them to pull out as they need, and use throughout the year, much like a 529 College Savings Plan. While an ABLE United account is an option to consider, you should be mindful of some of the differences between an ABLE United account and a 529 college savings account. The differences think about are:

- ABLE United accounts can only receive up to $14,000 in contributions from all sources per year (this limit increases to $15,000 in 2018).

- Funds in an ABLE United account can be used tax-free for a wide variety of qualified disability expenses including housing, transportation, medical, and even basic living expenses.

 

When receiving Government funded programs like SSI you can only have a certain amount of money in the bank in order to keep receiving the check. There does not seem to be many ways around that unless you would like to keep cash in a box in your house, and we all know how safe that may (or may not be).
