TMobile Helps Protect us Against Spam calls

We have all gotten spam calls, it’s seems pretty much a part of our daily life. Some are annoying you know, like the “your car warrantee call” or “calling from a certain hotel chain” call. Then there are calls that can be very dangerous. These are ones that we need to watch out for, especially when our teens are starting to get phones and they don’t know. T-Mobile has thought of a way to protect against those scammers.

My oldest is 16. She has had a phone for a while, but with all these spam calls going on I really wanted to talk to her about what is what and how things work, and how we can protect ourselves.

How to protect yourself on a spam call

One easy way is to only answer the phone to numbers you know. Even if the prefix is local. Companies now are starting to spoof to trick people by making them think the call is local by using the area code and prefix to your local city. The problem is, it is a real number, but not theirs. There is an owner to that number, but the owner doesn’t know that someone is using their number to make calls. So if someone were to call the number back they would be surprised to learn that calls were being placed.

They will try to tell you that your social security number will be suspended, or you have warrants out for your arrest unless you pay them large sums of money. To pay you will need to get gift cards or pay via western union.

First, that’s not how it works so don’t worry. Also Never ever pay someone in gift cards, it’s a sure sign of a scam. Social security and or the police will never ask for money in gift card. If Social Security wants to get ahold of you, they will so by mail. If the police need you, trust me, you will know.

There are a few great videos out there like this one of a police officer getting a spam call telling her if she didn’t pay she would have the sheriff come arrest her.

How can T-Mobile Help?

In 2017 both T-Mobile and Metro introduced technologies to help protect their customer from phone scams with Scam ID and Scam Block. Here are the 3 services that T-mobile offers. I highly recommend you take a look at it for not only for teen but also yourself.

SCAM ID:
Scam ID automatically alerts customers when an incoming call is likely a scam – designating the call as “Scam Likely”. No need to sign up or register a new app, this protection comes automatically by being a T-Mobile or Metro by T-Mobile customer on the T-Mobile network. Plus, you get the satisfaction of declining scammers.

WhenT-Mobile and Metro customers enable Scam Block, scam calls are stopped on the network level, before they ever reach the phone. No alert of a Scam Likely call, they just disappear completely to give you peace and quiet. Free to use, customers can turn it on in their MyTMobile account or by dialing #662# on their T-Mobile or Metro phone.

Customers can also use the Name ID app for even more control over who can reach them on their phone. With the premium controls provided in this app, you can see all
the calls that Scam Block is stopping, can block and unblock callers from your call log; manage entire categories of calls such as Telemarketers, Political Surveys and Charity Solicitations; and reverse look up calls from unknown numbers (even if they aren’t in your address book!). Name ID is include in the T-Mobile Magenta Plus Plans, or can be included for other customers for $4/month.

It's so important to protect yourself and your kids. We can’t be around our kids when they get every call, but we can teach them what to do when they get calls like. We can also try to protect them to help them not get calls and programs like SCAM BLOCK from T-Mobile are amazing.

We know there are scams but it’s amazing how many there are and how much they really make. According to First Orion It’s estimated that robocalls in October of 2018 reached 5.1 billion people. Also, in a 12 month time span scammers made over $10 billion. Something has to change. I don’t want your loved one to give even $1 to those scammers. Let’s educate our kids and make sure this doesn’t happen.

How many scam calls do you get a day? Do you have a plan like T-Mobile has and have to talked to your kids? Fill me in.

  14. I get so many spam calls on all of my lines. It's a pain in the rear. Currently, I have my son's phone to not ring except for the people who are in his contact list. It has worked out so far but I wish that I could just block all calls expect what is on my allowed list but I don't want to pay for expensive parental controls on his phone.

  15. Spam calls are super annoying and can be quite risky. My neighbor was work one day when he got a phone call. The caller threatened to kill my neighbor's dog and parents if he didn't cooperate (and buy gift cards.) The caller had a lot of information and was very convincing. It was quite scary. Luckily, that caller was arrested and is now in jail.

  16. Spam calls are the bain of everyone these days. My step mother fell for the fake locked #SS one and I was so upset she was giving them other family members info to go scam them too! I wish she had tmobile to help protect her from things like that.

  21. That's pretty cool! I always get robo calls and some random solicitors almost everyday. The annoyance is through the roof. I would love to check this out. Thanks for sharing!

  22. I go crazy over these robo calls and ATT is also doing something about it. Everyday I get a call about my car's warranty running out (my car is 5 months old lol) or my credit cards have been compromised which hasn't happened either! (Rena)
