Bark Genie, help control your

My dog House (pictured below) looks all calm and sweet (and very large). He can be a very lazy and quiet dog when he wants to be, but if he thinks something is around that isn’t supposed to be, well then he likes to bark, and bark and well bark. If you have dogs, I’m sure you know the annoyance of this. First Alert for pets asked if I would check out their Bark Genie, It helps dogs control their barking. I didn’t really have to think about it before saying
yes.

During the nice weather days House loves to be outside, and lay in the sun. There are times that I can’t be home so I put him in the outside kennel, that way he can still enjoy the sun while i’m gone running errands. The problem with that is, he barks. One of the things I really love about the Bark Genie is that I can put it anywhere. As long as it’s within 50 feet of the dog it will work. I don’t have to hook it up to anything so having it outside is ideal. I just set it outside his kennel and it’s perfect. You can also hang it on a tree or if you want it inside you can mount it on a wall (or just set on a shelf like I do).

Bark Genie uses ultrasonic sounds that only dogs can hear. To us, it’s just a machine sitting there, but to the dogs, it controls their barking.

Bark Genie has shared some really great tips that should be considered before using this product.

  • Make sure the device is pointing in the direction of the barking and is no longer than 50 feet away for Automatic/15 feet away for Handheld, and 5 feet from the ground.

  • Try to remove any large obstructions between the device and the dog. Try moving the  device to a different place or using a different setting.

  • This device may not be as effective on dogs who are hearing impaired or deaf. You may need to consult your veterinarian to make sure your dog does not have hearing problems.

  • Your dog may become familiar with the ultrasonic sound after extended use of the product. In order to avoid this try one or all of these tips: turn off the product periodically and when not in use, move it to a new location indoor or outside of your home or turn off for a few days.

  • Ultrasonic sounds are high frequency and inaudible to most humans. This ultrasonic noise device should NOT be used less than 12 inches from a human ear.

  • Consider using verbal commands in conjunction with the Bark Genie for extra behavioral reinforcement.

I wish I had recorded House’s reaction the first time I turned it on. He as of course barking at some kids playing across the street. I figured it was a great time to try it out. I turned it on and he just stopped and looked at me like, what on earth have you turned on? It hasn’t completely stopped his barking, but it has brought it down a notch, so for me that’s a win.

You can now buy the Bark Genie on their site or at Walmart for $35.97, which is a great price in my opinion. Also check out more products from First Alert for pets. If you do, please let me know what you think.

  1. Interesting. My dog likes to bark when we are driving. Wonder if it could be used in a car? I will look into this, thanks for sharing.
