Musselman’s Applesauce Empanadas

My family and I love applesauce. We love eating It plain, but even more on other food like pancakes or baking it into brownies to make them even more moist. I wanted to make some empanadas, and couldn’t decide what I wanted for the filling. So, I decided to use Musselman’s Cinnamon Applesauce. I really wish, I had thought of this sooner as they are so good, and so simple.

For the crust of empanadas, you can do a few things. The quickest and easiest is to buy pie crust, roll it out, use a cookie cutter and cut the circles. The other option is to make your own dough (which is what I do).
Dough:
  •          3 cups all-purpose flour
  •          ¼ to 1/2 teaspoon salt
  •          6 oz unsalted butter (1 ½ sticks)- I cube them to make it easier later
  •          1 egg
  •          1/4 cup to 1/2 milk or water if you want.

Instructions:
Using a food processor or blender like Vitamix or Ninja that has the pulse option.

1.    Mix the flour and salt, then add the butter. Pulse until somewhat mixed
2.    Add the egg and milk (or water), then continue to pulse until forms a dough
3.    Split the dough into 4 balls and flatten with a rolling pin (you can use a tortilla press if you want, but I found this dough sticks more and wasn’t as easy to press like tortilla dough is).
4.    Use a cookie cutter to cut out circles. Keep doing this until all the dough is used up.
5.    You can freeze the circles for later use if you want, otherwise use right away.
Filling:
Musselman’s applesauce. You can use pretty much any flavor, or texture (unsweetened, chunky, cinnamon etc)

Put together:
Set aside one egg whisked for later use (for an egg wash)
1.    Put a spoonful (you can judge how much based on how big the circle is. You don’t want to much or it won’t fold over).
2.    Fold the dough over to make a half circle. If you want a larger one, you can put another circle. Then use a fork to seal the edges. If they don’t seem to be sealing the right way, you can brush the edges with a tiny bit of water or egg white and that will act like glue.
3.    Once sealed, brush each with an egg wash.
4.    Sprinkle some cinnamon & sugar (or just sugar) over each empanada if you want, but this is optional.
5.    Place onto a baking sheet like a baking stone.
6.    Pre-heat oven to 375-400 and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown (baking stones will take a little longer than a sheet).

Let them cool for a few minutes before serving to eat. They are the best warm.
Enjoy.
I never really realized the options Musselman’s has like the chunky applesauce. I have a 4 year old and anything I can get that’s portable is key since we are always on the go. Musselman’s has the regular cups, or the big cups, which have 6oz in them instead of 4oz. These are great if you only need a little bit for breakfast, and don’t want to open a big jar, or running errands and the kids are hungry for a snack. Here are a few great reasons to buy Musselman’s:
• Non-GMO
• Sweetened with cane sugar for a better taste
• No high fructose corn syrup

I recommend that you check out the options the next time you are that the grocery store. You can find Musselman’s at pretty much any grocery store, along with the big box stores like Walmart. Here is a coupon for 50 cents off! Get creative and maybe even try making some applesauce empanadas for your family. Let me know what you think if you do try them.

*While Musselman’s uses GMO-free cane sugar in all of their apple sauce, the Honey-Cinnamon flavor contains honey, which cannot be verified GMO-free.

  1. Interesting. I would never think to just use applesauce. I usually go with like sliced apples in a pie filling. How easy!

  3. I remember making treats like these when I was young. I would make them out of leftover crust from the pies my mother was making. So easy and delicious!

  4. My family loves apple pie empanadas, but we never thought about using apple sauce either! This is so much easier than doing the whole peel apples & cook down with sugar deal we'd been doing in the past. Thanks for the tip!
