This time is certainly difficult for so many parents. It’s important to me that my kids not miss out on essential learning. My daughter is in high school and with college quickly approaching – I want to make sure she is prepared. At the same time, my husband and I need to keep working – so having good connectivity is important to all of us right now.
But so many families are struggling during this time because they don’t have the connectivity they need to continue work, school or online fun. To address this growing concern, T-Mobile has launched Project 10Million – delivering internet connectivity to millions of underserved student households at no cost to them. All kids should have the opportunity to thrive and learn – like mine are doing during this difficult time.
Now that Mya is in her Senior year of high school, she doesn’t need as much help or direction with homework (thank goodness, as I’m not smart enough for that). This means I can spend my time focusing on helping Fallon with her homework, as she’s only in the third grade. Honestly, this isn’t easy on the kids or the parents. None of us are used to having kids home learning. We are used to them going to school and learning straight from their teachers. I’m sure most parents are feeling this way, I know my friends with kids are.
This week we did a lot of different activities splitting our time between online homework and something a little more fun. Take a look below at what we have been up to.
There are times that we just need to take a little break from learning and have some fun. Fun for me is baking. It also makes me smile that Fallon loves to bake and cook as well. She used to want to be a chef but now wants to be a vet as her love for animals just pours out of her. I told her maybe she can combine those two loves and create new pet food, as well as be a vet. She thought that was an awesome idea!
Right now we are making some donuts as it’s fall and it just felt like a donut kind of day. Fallon did so much of the work, she’s really becoming a pro at the mixing, and is almost ready for Master Chef Jr (watch out kids). She even helps me search for recipe ideas on her phone.
We also got outside this week. Fallon’s teacher assigned an outdoor gym activity and so she decided to practice her batting for softball. I had her look up some tips on her phone first to get advice before starting (yay for good service). Then she got to the batting. She’s really got some great use out of the self-pitcher I got for her. It really came in handy!
So far the kids are doing ok. They miss their friends the most, but they can do some video chats with them and that helps. Not having the teachers right there for homework is also hard especially for Mya who is very much a hands-on learner. We do what we can, much like other kids and parents who are going through the exact same thing as we are.
What is T-Mobile doing for the community?
I have seen some very generous companies in my time and I have to say, T-Mobile really takes the cake. Above I mentioned their Project 10Million. This project is amazing and unlike one I’ve ever heard of before. Let me break it down for you:
After learning before the pandemic that 9 million, yes that’s MILLION, school-age kids didn’t have reliable internet to do their homework, T-Mobile stepped up and created this program. I live in rural WI, and I was shocked to learn how many people in my area still didn’t have access to the internet. Since COVID-19 changed our world, as many as 50 million kids have been forced to do full time or part time remote learning, and this is where Project 10Mllion stepped it up even more by giving school districts additional options to help meet their students’ needs.
.
Project 10Million offers free wireless hotspots, up to 100GB per year of free high-speed data, and access to at-cost tablets and laptops, or the equivalent value of approximately $500 annually per student household.
I know that not all kids are doing 100% e-learning. Some are doing in-person learning this fall. The Un-carrier expanded the project by working with school districts and allowing them to apply to one of the two plans. Schools can choose the 100GB per month option or a fully unlimited plan. The best part is that every district gets free wireless hotspots and access to at-cost laptops and tablets, and they still have the flexibility to pick the solution that works best for their district. Plus, it’s all still free to their students. Interested school districts can sign up today, so please share this with any teachers or admins that you know to make sure they take advantage of this plan. T-Mobile, wants students to have this in their hands.
We are so thankful for the service and reliable connectivity that T-Mobile has given us. Without that Dan and I wouldn’t have been able to do our work, the kids wouldn’t have been able to do their homework, and it would have been a huge disaster. Please take a look at Project 10Million and if you know school districts that need it, please pass it along to them. If you need it yourself, reach out to your school and tell them you need it. That’s what it’s there for!
How are you doing with your kiddos at home or in school/combination? I’d love to hear about your family’s experience so far.
