Mental Health is more Important than Ever

This was sponsored by t-mobile

Mental health is a topic that is important to everyone on Earth, yet we never talk about it enough, especially this past year. We acted like it was a huge taboo topic, and in my opinion, it wasn’t until after the pandemic that people started taking it more seriously. It’s why May is so special to me as Mental Health Awareness Month. This month people and companies really are focusing on what’s important. I’ll explain below how companies like T-Mobile are stepping up over such an important issue.

I used to not really talk about my mental health a lot. I tended to just keep things inside. I finally decided to take care of myself and see a therapist, and it has helped. Later this month will mark the first anniversary of my mother’s death. Mother’s Day was very hard on me as I understood that I wouldn’t be seeing her, calling her, getting her a gift, or anything. Our relationship had its ups and downs, and what mother-daughter relationship doesn’t? But, it was still incredibly hard not to see her and by taking steps to help myself, I’m learning how to deal with my emotions.

One of the things I do when I get stressed is bake. I find it calms me down, and I’m able to center my thoughts. When my kids bake with me it’s even better as it’s something we can do together. I recommend finding something that you love to do, and when you are having those difficult mental health days, do that. It doesn’t have to be complicated! It can be something as simple as coloring. You would be surprised how calming it can be. Whatever it is, enjoy, relax, and know you are not alone.

In today’s world, it can be hard to find companies that really take mental health seriously. T-Mobile is one of those. Not only are they being very supportive of their employees but also the military. In the climate we live in now both of these elements are huge. T-Mobile wants their employees AND everyone else to know that the more you listen to your co-workers and peers, the more we can learn. This way we can help each other. They have developed 3 ways to help employees:

They offer a multi-faceted mental health program called LiveMagenta, available to all employees and their families 24/7.

They also joined the FCC in the rollout of the 988 National Suicide Prevention Hotline, a three-digit phone number that anyone in crisis can dial to connect with suicide prevention specialists and mental health counselors.

And T-Mobile previously signed the Department of Veterans Affairs’ “Pledge to Prioritize Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing in the Workplace.

Speaking of the military, May is Military Appreciation Month as well. During the month there are a few special days that we honor the military and their spouses: Military Spouse Appreciation Day (5/7), Armed Forces Day (5/15), and Memorial Day (5/31). T-Mobile makes a point to honor our military daily but wanted to make an extra effort this year to show support

One way of showing support is by being the #1 option for the military as they have the biggest wireless plan discount for military (Military MAX), veterans, and their families. Did you know that they committed to hiring 10,000 military vets and their spouses by 2023? This will help so many families. Besides that, they are extremely invested in the wellbeing and mental health of our members of the armed forces. Employees can join the Veterans & Allies Network (VAN): a community of T-Mobile military service members, current and otherwise, seeking a source of allyship to share their experiences.

We need to continue to support companies like T-Mobile as they are so important to our communities. What do you do to destress and help your mental health?

  1. I definitely agree with you that we should normalize talking about mental health and treat it like it's any other regular condition. While there is some progress, it's indeed still treated as taboo by most people. I talk about it openly and have actually discussed with my wife that I may be in the autism spectrum.

    1. Currently, what I do to destress is that I write. Writing for me is a form of therapy and I like that I can also be productive when I do it.
