Bluum Toddler February Review

You guys know, I know I've said it a million times, but there's nothing I love more than subscription boxes! As a full-time working mother, I am way too busy to research new products. I love finding new brands/products for my family and our readers! This is why I   absolutely love monthly subscription boxes. I subscribe to quite a few boxes, and it's always a little surprise each month when I open it!

I have been receiving the bluum subscription boxes for over a year now, and they're getting much better. As I've said before, I was considering cancelling after my December subscription, as I got a bunch of duplicate items and stuff that was just not age appropriate for Nugget.

Make Time for Play

Tucked inside each issue of BABYBUG are stories, poems, and pictures of babies and toddlers doing what they do best: playing! In this issue we see Kim discovering many ways to play with an ordinary cardboard box, while other selections show children playing in the snow or simply wiggling their feet. Research confirms that play supports every area of development—physical, cognitive, social, and emotional. It helps children prepare for a future in which technology will transform our lives at a rapidly increasing pace.
When your child plays, whether it be with cardboard boxes, snow, play-dough, blocks, or balls, he or she strengthens the very abilities that the future will demand. While playing, a child learns to think independently, to understand the basic principles of how things work, to risk both innovation and failure, to make connections between concepts, and to imagine solutions to problems. Play is a critical foundation for every child’s future.

What, then, is play? How do we know when children are playing? Watch your children’s faces as they build, run, pretend, dig, or climb, and you’ll know. As you watch, you’ll see them making their own decisions, solving problems, and gaining confidence. Your eyes will confirm the research and the need to play every day—even on the busy ones. Here’s what you might see:

When they’re playing, kids usually choose tasks that challenge, but don’t overwhelm them. “How high can I jump?” “I bet I can use this cardboard for building something. I wonder if I can make a road for my cars?” In play, children set their own challenges and find out they can succeed.

When they’re playing, children don’t worry about failing. Play, after all, is supposed to be fun. And you don’t get evaluated on fun. What’s more, because play is a no-risk situation, children often find themselves attempting more and more. In play, children try out new skills and discover they can perform at a higher level.
When they’re playing, children can pretend that they’re the ones in charge. Instead of having to finish his vegetables, he becomes the cook. Instead of taking a nap, she puts her doll to bed. Play builds self-confidence. In play, children put aside feelings of being powerless and experience being capable.
Meeting challenges, making decisions, trying new skills, and feeling capable—it all happens even as play enchants and charms.

We hope that as you and your child explore each issue of BABYBUG, you’ll discover ideas for encouraging and enjoying creative play. As Alison Gopnik, a leading researcher in the field of children’s cognitive development, said about play: “It’s a crucial part of what makes all humans so smart.” We would add that play is also what gives a measure of joy and meaning to young lives. Make time for play.

Playing Together

Your face is your newborn’s best toy. It’s an ever-changing combination of movement, color, and sound. What’s more, it responds to what your baby does in a way that even the most expensive mobile can’t.

Play train after reading “Down by the Station.” You pretend you’re the engine and your toddler can be a boxcar. Then chug along together. Your train might chug its way around the room, or it might have a destination, such as the kitchen table for dinner, the car for a trip to the store, or the bathtub (even busy trains need a little soap and water to look their best).

Try a hiding game with your baby. Wrap one of your child’s toys in a small blanket. Let her unwrap it. After reading “Feet” together, cover your baby’s toes with a blanket and watch him pull it away.

An empty plastic coffee can makes a good rolling toy for your baby to chase when he or she begins to crawl. Fill the can with peg-style clothespins before replacing the lid. It will rattle as it rolls. Later, your baby can enjoy emptying out the can and dropping the clothespins back in.

Make a toy mailbox by cutting a wide slot in one side of a cardboard carton. You could paint it or cover it with red, white, and blue paper, but your child can also have fun with a plain box. Once you have made the mailbox, supply your toddler with a stack of junk mail. Show him how to mail his letters, find them, and mail them again. Be sure to visit a real mailbox together, too, and let him drop your mail in.

When your baby begins to coo or babble, play verbal “ping-pong” together. When she makes a sound like “Ahh” or “Mmm-mm,” make the same sound right back to her. Wait a moment and she’ll probably repeat the sound--then it’s her turn again! Sometimes babies get so excited about playing, they need to look away or pause just to rest.

This issue of BABYBUG contains a traditional bouncing game, “Uncle John.”  Hold your child securely as you gently bounce him on your lap and chant the rhyme.  Dip him slightly between your knees when you say, “Father fell off! Mother fell off!” Your baby will begin to eagerly anticipate the exciting part of the ride.
