How to Live the Digital Nomad Life

This post is sponsored by T-Mobile.

We have all seen those Tiktok videos where people are on a cruise ship and in a zoom meeting, or on the beach and working. Well, I’m here to tell you, it’s real life, and these things really can and do happen. Thanks to modern technology from companies like T-Mobile, you too could be sitting on the beach working, instead of languishing in your office.

In fact, that was the focus of a recent T-Mobile Stories Mobile Diaries podcast! The topic was 55+ Digital Nomads: Learning New Tricks to be specific…And I have to say, it really resonated with me!

Over the past 10 years I have been blessed with a job that has allowed me to be somewhat of a

digital nomad myself. If I have my laptop, phone or tablet, I can work. While I haven’t reached

#goal levels of the cruise workplace (any cruise company reading this hook a girl up, haha), I

have been able to go all over the country from Florida, to Colorado, California, Nevada, Louisiana

and so many other places while working.

It is so thrilling that we can just all pick up and go now. We don’t have to think through the

logistics of finding a place to work. We only need to worry about where we are going to visit next

because anyplace can become our workplace!

When people think of the digital nomad life they often think about carefree twenty somethings, but that

just isn’t the case anymore. It could reference any age from 20’s to 50+ and is actually growing faster

in the older age group than any other.

The T-Mobile podcast I mentioned earlier featured Siobhan Farr and she is such an inspiration for us wanderers! A light bulb went off for her one day and she decided to just travel and work since she didn’t have to be in a traditional office for her job. So, in 2019 she started selling her belongings and embarked on an epic adventure. Of course, in 2020 COVID hit and she had to stay in Ecuador a bit longer than expected, but hey, that’s all part of the adventure right?

She actually ended up becoming the Spark Originator of Digital Nomads Beyond 50, an online community for all kinds of people whether they are looking to delay retirement without missing out on their golden years, who currently travel/work and are trying to find a similar aged community, or are just curious about this life.

Siobhan really lives the mantra “home is where you lay your head.”  I seriously didn’t want this Mobile Diaries by T-Mobile Stories to end and walked away fully ready to become even more of a nomad myself! And I’m not the only one in my family who feels that way.

My husband is currently out in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin this week on vacation with his son. During that time, he needs to get some work done. Thank goodness for hotpots, 5G and T-Mobile because their Extended Range 5G covers nearly everyone in the country — 315 million people across 1.8 million square miles. 225 million people nationwide are covered with super-fast Ultra Capacity 5G, and T-Mobile expects to cover 260 million in 2022 and 300 million next year! Without T-Mobile he wouldn’t be able to get the work completed that he wants to.

And that is just another example of a person I know taking advantage of the digital nomad life. It is such a hot topic right now and I totally understand why the T-Mobile Stories team tackled it. Speaking of hot topics, you may want to check out some of their other podcast topics like “The Hesidator: How the pandemic changed online dating” and “Mobile Mindfulness: Explaining the “new normal” in mental health.

So, tell me…If you could live the digital nomad life, where would be the first place you would travel?

  1. We went on a cruise last week and I was so thankful for T-Mobile and the ships Wi-Fi to connect with work what needed. I plan on traveling a lot more because of this.

  2. We don't live the digital nomad life full-time, but we do love to travel. Luckily, my husband and I work for ourselves so can take it with us. We just got home from 3 weeks of vacation this summer and were able to work throughout. Partially from free wifi, partially from hotspotting.

  4. I love my life because it's this. I'm self-employed, and it's all digital. We can go anywhere whenever we want as long as my husband's schedule lines up.

  5. Technically I can get away with working almost anywhere. The husband unfortunately can't so no travelling for us. I've always found T Mobile great.

  6. I don't have the flexibility of working from home or working remotely. But this would be a great way to live if I did! You could connect from most anyplace, taking in the scenery while you work.

  7. As a travel writer, I feel that I have the best of both worlds. I travel a ton, but I still have a home base, which is nice!

  8. I was more of a digital nomad before the cost of living rise here in the UK! Then I had to bite the bullet and go back to full time work. Sadly the 45 hour work weeks are killing me and it's not even 3 months in. I'm finding myself becoming more and more distant from my passions and it's horrible. But it's either that or we can't heat the house. I wish there was more opportunities i.e freelance writing work here so I could go back to that way of life.

  12. I'm not in my 50's yet, but nearing it. I would love to be in a community like that! I am a Digital Nomad, I do take my work everywhere with me -- including our family vacations and while waiting for my kids at rehearsals.

  13. Yes, it is nice to be a digital nomad. If even partially. My desk keeps me chained, but I'd love to make the move to more freedom.

  14. Being a digital nomad is the goal for almost everyone. I have to say that I am blessed to be in a company that also allows remote work. It saves you the hassle for filing for that vacation leave.

  18. I'm not even sure where I would want to travel first. Probably somewhere with a beach though. I wouldn't mind going back to Dauphin Island, AL again. I loved it there.

  19. Funny you should mention T-Mobile. I've been thinking about switching to T-Mobile because they have better plans for frequent overseas travelers.
